The Som­mer­feld Expan­sion is an very inter­est­ing piece of phys­ics (espe­cially for under­gradu­ates); partly because of its con­cep­tu­al sim­pli­city but really because it demon­strates the real world applic­a­tion of phys­ics. It is essen­tially an approx­im­a­tion made to an equa­tion which assists in phys­ic­al inter­pret­a­tion. Indeed, much of the phys­ic­al mean­ings of equa­tions only become appar­ent after approx­im­a­tions such as this one have been made.
